Equal Opportunities Policy
BEGIN is committed to Equal Opportunities and anti-discriminatory practice with regard to race, colour, gender, sexuality, ability, religion, culture, HIV status, state of health, age, responsibility for dependents, physical or mental ability or socio-economic position. This means that any person coming into contact with BEGIN will receive equal treatment.
It is expected that any member of BEGIN will at all times work to this statement whenever carrying out work on behalf of BEGIN. All members must demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to the principles of this equal opportunities statement.
Where we come across anti equal opportunities or discriminatory statements or practice we will challenge this. It is also important to remember that it is unlawful to discriminate directly or indirectly because of an individual's race, sex or disability under the Race Relations Act 1976, the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 and the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.
Direct discrimination is when a person is less favorably treated because of sex, race or disability.
Indirect discrimination is when a individual is subjected to a requirement or condition that cannot be applied equally to all groups and this has an adverse effect upon this individual.
Victimisation; where an individual may be treated less favorably because that individual has taken action against BEGIN under Statute
It is unlawful to positively discriminate in favour of certain groups but positive action to enable greater representation of under-represented groups is lawful. Therefore BEGIN will endeavour to ensure that applications are attracted from both sexes, all races and from disabled people.
BEGIN will treat seriously any grievance arising out of discrimination or harassment, which breaches this Equal Opportunities Policy and will take action where necessary and appropriate.
Where there is infringement of this Equal Opportunities Policy the complaint or incident should be reported in accordance with the Grievance Policy´s procedure. This will be investigated and if upheld will be dealt with in accordance with the Disciplinary Policy´s procedure.
